The value of a hazardous-area inspection is not the distance a robot walks. It is whether an operator can trust the observation enough to make a better maintenance decision without sending a person into unnecessary danger.

ANYbotics said on October 27 that ANYmal X was shipping to customers including Equinor and DSM-Firmenich after an early-access programme. The company describes an explosion-protected legged robot using visual, thermal, acoustic and gas sensing, with findings connected to its Shift inspection platform. The release is vendor evidence of deliveries; it does not publish a customer-level study of defect detection or avoided downtime.

Admission to a hazardous zone is one boundary

Equipment suitability and inspection effectiveness need separate acceptance decisions. A site must verify the relevant certification and operating restrictions. It must then establish whether the robot captures the required assets, under the conditions in which maintenance teams need the readings.

The vendor’s wider platform inspection count should not be read as the new model’s operating record. Our assessment is that route completion, usable readings, rejected measurements and staff intervention form a more useful site-level scorecard than a broad fleet headline.

An anomaly does not authorise a repair

Integration can place evidence next to maintenance records, but it does not remove the need to decide who confirms a defect and authorises work. The same distinction applies when an inspection is missed or a sensor fails: the operator needs an explicit fallback.

Deliveries allow those operating questions to be tested with customers. Wider adoption would become more credible if operators report repeatable coverage and explain how findings changed maintenance. The next evidence should connect the observation, the human decision and the resulting work, rather than assume that a completed robot mission proves all three.
